Gorilla trekking in Uganda, planned with care

Meeting a mountain gorilla family in the mist of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of East Africa’s most moving wildlife experiences. This guide explains how to plan a rewarding, responsible trek in Uganda, with clear advice from our Ugandan team.

What the experience includes

After a briefing by Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers, you hike through ancient forest in a small group. Treks can be gentle or demanding depending on the gorilla family’s location, and time with the family is limited to protect their wellbeing. Porters are available and directly support local households.

Where to go: Bwindi or Mgahinga?

Bwindi offers several trekking sectors and the widest choice of gorilla families and lodges. Mgahinga is smaller and beautifully scenic, with the Virunga volcanoes as a backdrop. We match your permit sector, accommodation and route to your dates, fitness and budget.

When to travel and what to pack

Uganda’s gorilla trekking is possible year-round. Drier months are popular, while wetter seasons can bring lush scenery and quieter trails. Pack waterproof hiking shoes, light layers, gardening gloves, a daypack, water and insect repellent. A reasonable level of fitness helps; we plan transfers and support thoughtfully.
